Product Features
| Cap | The signature gold coated cap is decorated with vertical lines reminiscent of a treasure chest. The cap ring bears the year '1871', which refers to the year in which he told his family that would become a writer instead of following the family tradition and becoming a lighthouse engineer. |
| Cap Top | The emblem is made of mother-of-pearl, surrounded by precious red lacquer. The mirror-inverted quote on the cap to ring UNDER THE WIDE AND STARRY SKY picks up on the theme of duality as depicted in Stevenson's novel 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. |
| Clip | The shape of the clip reminds of a belaying pin that is used to secure ropes and lines of running rigging on boats. Behind the clip is a stylized compass rose, based on the compass rose in Stevenson's drawing, and some of the lines representing the different wind directions. |
| Overall Design | The overall design is inspired by a spyglass. The barrel is equipped with a rotatable inner tube with which the flag of the ship 'Hispaniola“ can be changed. The 'Red Ensign' of the United Kingdom was mainly used for merchant or passenger ships. It symbolizes the departure for Treasure Island. The 'Jolly Roger' flag symbolizes the capture of the 'Hispaniola' by pirates. |
| Cone | The shape of the cone is based on the shape of a spyglass, with the base reminiscent of the opening of an old spyglass. |
| Nib | The rhodium-coated Au750 solid gold nib is decorated with the word TUSITALA. The clouds and seagulls depict the second part of his journey to Samoa - travelling out on the open sea seeing nothing but clouds and birds. |
| Limitation | The limitation refers to the publication year of Treasure Island in 1883. |
Marketing Verbiage
Robert Louis Stevenson, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1850, had two great desires: for freedom and for immersing himself in other worlds. He composed essays and travel accounts as well as his legendary adventure stories populated with striking characters whose names send a shiver down the spines of readers around the world: Long John Silver, Captain Flint, Jekyll and Hyde. The Montblanc Writers Edition Homage to Robert Louis Stevenson is dedicated to this imaginative storyteller. The novel “Treasure Island” inspired many design details of the edition. The overall shape of the writing instrument and the rings on the cone combine to create an impression of a historic, extendable spyglass. Retelling the story of the Treasure Island , this edition shows the famous Hispaniola on the barrel, intromitted in precious Black lacquer. Embarking on a journey, the Hispaniola waves a British Ensign held behind a small window. Following the storyline of mutiny by pirates, the flag can be turned by a little knob to reveal a pirate's flag. Vertical lines that bring to mind the planks of the schooner “Hispaniola” and a traditional sea chest adorn the signature gold-coated cap. Behind the signature gold-coated clip, the lines converge in a compass rose, while the clip imitates the shape of a belaying pin, to which the lines of a ship’s rigging would be secured. The cap top is crowned by the Montblanc emblem in Mother-of-Pearl. The cap ring is adorned with an engraving of Stevenson’s signature. As a reference to Robert Louis Stevenson’s passion for seafaring and his re-settlement in the South Seas, the handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib is engraved with clouds, seagulls and the title given by the Samoans to the great writer and world traveler, “Tusitala”. With signature gold and/or signature gold-coating, Montblanc describes the enlightened shade of yellow gold which has become an appreciated tone for the Maison’s Writing Instruments.
