Christopher Columbus (1451-1506) was a famous Italian navigator who led the first expeditions to Central and South America as well as to the Caribbean. Sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain he hoped to find a new route to India. In 1492, after 36 days of sailing, he set foot on what is today known as the Bahamas and claimed it for Spain.
