Certain novels go down in literary history and, at the same time, become the symbol of an entire era. F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is one of those modern gems of American literature. Published in 1925, the novel fascinatingly portrays the Jazz Age and the Roaring Twenties, a period of unprecedented prosperity and excess. Vibrant New York, the opulent mansions of Long Island, and the dazzling parties of high society are the backdrop for the story of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who will do everything possible to win back the affections of the lost love of his youth, Daisy Buchanan. Montblanc pays tribute to this literary masterpiece, also synonymous with the glamorous world of Art Deco, with the Great Personalities Limited Edition 100 Homage to The Great Gatsby. Art Deco covered everything in glamour. Architecture literally emerged from the two-dimensional realm and soared skyward, symbolizing progress and emancipation. Its decorative arches, steps, angles, and irregular lines gave buildings an unmistakable dynamism and aesthetic, and clearly also inspired this limited edition. The symmetrical skeletonized arches and lines crafted in 750 yellow gold reveal the hidden translucent black surface. The shimmering green tsavorites on the cap and barrel are a reference to the green light on the pier at Daisy's house, a symbol of hope for the lovesick millionaire Jay Gatsby, better known as The Great Gatsby. Product images may differ from the actual product. Jay Gatsby is the embodiment of a universal ideal: the self-made American man. However, behind Gatsby's opulent facade, the dream begins to crumble. Their riches came from the alcohol trade during Prohibition, when the forbidden liquid was often packaged in small, easily concealed screw-top bottles. Every drop was precious. Consequently, not only the contents were revered, but also the design of the flasks. In Great Personalities Limited Edition 100 Homage to The Great Gatsby, the cap mimics the engraved screw-top of an Art Deco flask. The myth of the American Dream is reflected in the fine rings in the colors of the American flag that adorn the cap. Like the skeletonized cap, the details of the edition are made of 750 yellow gold, as gold is a symbol of wealth, power, and status, and yellow is the color most frequently mentioned in the novel. In contrast, the translucent black cap and barrel represent the corruption and moral decay that lie beneath the glittering facade of affluent society. The radiant green light that shines each night on the dock at Daisy's house is the only ray of hope and is depicted here, alongside the tsavorite of the skeletonized cap and the reservoir,by a green malachite inlay in the ferrule. It represents Gatsby's longing for a better future and his desire to win Daisy back. However, his love is unrequited and seems unattainable, despite all his fortune. The intoxicating, yet seemingly illusory, power of money is symbolized by the gold-plated, money-clip-shaped clip. Its rounded opening is decorated with Jay Gatsby's diamond-studded initials in a rhomboid Art Deco monogram. The Montblanc emblem crowning it is made of mother-of-pearl and surrounded by black onyx, a combination of materials that inspired some of the most elegant creations of Art Deco jewelry designers. The elegance of its lines is the key Art Deco motif, striking and sophisticated at the same time. A purely linear engraving also adorns the handcrafted 750 gold nib. The number 100 is significant in more ways than one. It indicates the limited number of Great Personalities Limited Edition 100 Homage to The Great Gatsby pieces, alluding to the centennial of the fictional character, that is, the centennial of the novel's publication. It also refers to the world of money and the highest denomination dollar bill in circulation at the time.
