Pyotr Ilych Tschaikowsky (1840-1893) was the first Russian composer whose music had a lasting international impression. Especially Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker gained international fame. The opera Eugene Onegin is a popular example of lyric opera, verse novel by Alexander Pushkin, to which Tschaikowsky added dramatic music.
